Student & Child Privacy

The short version. A child never signs themselves up. A parent opens the account, adds the child, and decides whether that child gets their own login. We collect only what teaching them requires. Children are not asked for an email address, have no public profile, cannot be contacted by strangers through the service, and are never advertised to. You can see, correct or delete everything we hold about your child at any time, and doing so does not require you to close the account.

1. Who this applies to
This page applies to every child on the service and is written with the youngest in mind. Where United States law treats children under 13 differently — principally the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) — we apply that stricter standard, and in most respects we apply it to older children too rather than maintaining two sets of rules.
It sits alongside our Privacy Policy and adds to it. Where the two differ about a child, this page governs.
2. How consent works
A child cannot create an account here. There is no route by which they could: the sign-up form creates a parent account, and children exist only because a parent adds them from inside it.
By adding your child, you are giving us permission to collect the information listed below and use it to teach them. That permission is yours to give and yours to take back. Separate things we do not treat as covered by it — recording a lesson, or giving a child an email address — are asked for separately, and each is off until you turn it on.
3. What we collect from a child

We do not ask a child for an email address, a phone number, a home address, a date of birth, a photograph of themselves, or anything about their family. Reminders about a child's lessons go to their parents. A child has an email address on file only if a parent deliberately grants one, and a parent can remove it just as easily.
4. What we never do
- No advertising. Not to children, not to anyone, and we do not let anybody else advertise here either.
- No selling or sharing a child's information for anyone else's purposes.
- No tracking. There are no analytics, advertising pixels or third-party scripts anywhere in the service.
- No public profile. A child cannot be searched for, listed, or found by anyone who is not already in their household or teaching them.
- No open contact. A child can only exchange messages with their own tutor and their own parents. There is no way for a stranger to reach them.
- No leaderboards or comparison with other children. Progress is shown to that child and their own household.
- We never require a child to give more than is needed in order to take part in something.
5. Keeping children apart from each other
Brothers and sisters on the same account do not see each other's work. A child's lessons, homework, results and messages are theirs. This is enforced on our server for every request — not merely by leaving a link off a screen — so it holds even if a child tries a web address directly.
6. Who can see a child's work
- The child.
- Their parents or guardians on the account — both, if there are two.
- The tutors who teach them, and only for as long as they teach them.
- Us, where it is needed to run the service or answer a question you have raised.
Our tutors work online and may live anywhere in the world; what a tutor abroad can see is exactly what any tutor can see, and no more. This is set out in the Privacy Policy.
7. Recordings of children
A recorded lesson contains a child's face and voice, so it is treated more carefully than anything else here. Recording is never automatic; someone must start it; everyone in the room is shown that it is happening; and recordings are deleted after 90 days without anyone having to ask.
You may tell us that your child's lessons are never to be recorded, and we will honour that for every lesson from then on. The full detail is on Recording & Consent.
8. Reviewing, correcting and deleting
As the parent or guardian, at any time you may:
- See everything we hold about your child.
- Correct anything that is wrong.
- Delete a single recording, a piece of work, or your child's entire record.
- Take a copy of it in a readable form.
- Refuse a particular use — recording, for instance — and carry on using everything else.
Much of this you can do yourself in the portal. For the rest, email [email protected]. We confirm who you are first, and a request about a child is only ever accepted from that child's parent or guardian. There is no charge, and we aim to finish within 30 days.
Deleting a child's record does not close your account, and asking us to delete something is never treated as a reason to stop teaching them.
9. Withdrawing consent
Tell us you are withdrawing consent and we will stop collecting anything further about your child and delete what we hold, keeping only what we are genuinely required to keep. We will say plainly what that is, if anything. Withdrawing consent means we can no longer provide tutoring to that child, because there is no way to teach them without keeping a record of what they are being taught — we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
10. Schools and FERPA
UpperScholars is engaged directly by families. We are not a school, we do not receive records from a school, and no school has appointed us. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) governs records held by schools, and does not apply to what we hold for you.
If that ever changes — if a school engages us for its pupils — we would act as a "school official" under FERPA at that school's direction, and we would publish the terms of that before it began.
